Traditional containers restrict vital oxygen needed at the root level creating an environment for pathogens and circling roots.

For years gardeners have added stones to the bottom of their plant containers to remedy drainage issues, and promote root development. This is an example of conventional reasoning, based on good intentions that current research has proven to be counter- productive. Roots will become entangled in the rocks, blocking drainage and making the plant vulnerable to pathogens.

Studies at Oregon State University concluded, “Circling roots (in potted) plants have difficulty getting enough water and nutrients shortening a plant’s life span.” The Smart Soil Separator creates a permanent pocket of air at the bottom of the growing container.

Most people understand that plants need oxygen. Many do not realise how important oxygen is to the plant’s root system.

According to Washington State University… “Circling roots are ‘burned’ off or pruned when exposed to air. This causes the plant to constantly produce new and highly branched roots”. It is this system of finely branched feeder roots that carry nutrients to the plant. This encourages vigorous plant growth.

A potting container where the bottom measurement falls between 5″ to 7.5″ diameter with at least one drain hole and a saucer is recommended. Simply adjust the tabs on the outside of the Smart Soil Separator to fit your pot, remove the plant from its container, trim any circling roots and re-pot adding a good quality potting mix as necessary.

The Smart Soil Separator takes the guesswork out of watering by using a sub-irrigation wicking chamber. Potting mix is placed in the wicking chamber where it comes in contact with the water below.

The plant’s roots pull up the moisture as it is needed. This means it waters plants the way nature intended.
